Lowered oestrogen levels occur during menopause. These changes can cause hormone imbalances and can lead to unwanted and difficult side effects and symptoms. As women age, they can experience difficult issues that can occur during menopause. These symptoms can be mild or can cause many issues within an individuals life. Some menopause symptoms can negatively affect your personal relationships, work-life or mental health. These symptoms can cause unwanted difficulties and disruptions. Oral HRT is licensed for use in women who have not had a period in 12 consecutive months. They usually contain estradiol, which helps to replace oestrogen deficiency and a synthetic form of progesterone. Some tablets contain both hormones; some have a 14-day cycle of a single hormone with a 14-day cycle of combined hormones or can contain the only oestrogen.

  • What are the risks involved in using HRT?

HRT comes with some risks that need to be considered before starting treatment, which can be discussed in your consultation. With all medications, there are ways to minimise risks and having regular check-ups will ensure that any risks from using HRT are monitored and minimised.

It is important to note that studies suggest that combined HRT tablets can cause a slightly increased chance of developing breast cancer, blood clots or strokes. Although these risks are small, it is advised to take these into consideration before treatment and to discuss concerns about these risks with your doctors. During your treatment, your doctor should monitor these potential health risks regularly. You should also ensure that you attend regular breast cancer screenings in order to monitor risks throughout your treatment.
