FAQ

  • How does Mirvaso gel treat rosacea symptoms of facial erythema?

The active ingredient in Mirvaso gel brimonidine, helps to shrink blood vessels and reduce symptoms of rosacea, including redness and flushing.

  • How do I apply Mirvaso gel?

If you have been diagnosed with facial erythema, apply Mirvaso gel once daily to dry skin. The maximum daily recommended dose of this gel is 1 g - equivalent to 5 pea sized amounts.

To begin treatment, the initial recommended daily dose is less than the maximum dose, for at least one week. The amount of gel can then be increased depending on your skin's tolerability of the medication.

When applying Mirvaso gel, it should be applied smoothly and in a thin layer across the entire face, avoiding the eyes, eyelids, lips, mouth and inner nose.

Mirvaso gel should only be applied to the face.

Do not apply Mirvaso gel to irritated skin or open wounds.

If you experience severe irritation or allergic reactions, discontinue use immediately.

  • Is it safe to use Mirvaso gel continuously?

Mirvaso gel can be used continuously. It needs to be used every day for reducing blood flow and for redness and flushing to be controlled.

However, symptom exacerbation is very common in patients treated with Mirvaso topical gel. In clinical studies, 16% of patients reported adverse reactions to the gel.

Treatment should therefore begin with a pea sized amount of gel, and the dose increased gradually up to the maximum daily dose.

  • How long will it take for Mirvaso gel to work?

Mirvaso gel will start to work in as little as 30 minutes and lasts for up to 12 hours.

However, once the effects of Mirvaso topical gel begins to wear off, some patients have reported rosacea worse than before, with erythema and flushing returned and redness worse than it was before treatment.

These symptoms typically subsided after discontinuation of Mirvaso topical gel.

  • What do you do if you miss an application?

The effects of Mirvaso gel last for up to a day. It needs to be applied daily to be effective.

If you miss an application, you won’t experience any reduced redness for that day.

Do not apply twice in one day.

  • Can I use Mirvaso gel and other rosacea treatments together?

Yes, Mirvaso gel can be used in conjunction with other prescription medicines for the treatment of rosacea symptoms.

However, these other medicines should only be applied after the Mirvaso gel has dried.

  • Can I use Mirvaso gel and makeup together?

Yes. Apply Mirvaso gel as usual and allow it to dry completely before applying makeup and other cosmetics.

  • Who can't use Mirvaso gel?

If you have a hypersensitivity to the active ingredient, or if the patient is less than 2 years old, do not use this prescription treatment.

Patients receiving monoamine oxidase inhibitor therapy, and patients on tricyclic or tetracyclic antidepressants which affect noradrenergic transmission, should also not use Mirvaso gel.
