Smoking is one of the hardest habits to quit. There are several methods to try and help a patient stop, but Champix is clinically the most effective. These tablets work in the brain to block nicotine receptors, thus reducing the urge to smoke. It also helps reduce the withdrawal effect.

Champix contains an ingredient called Varenicline, which works on receptors in the brain to stop the craving of cigarettes. It also helps to stop receptors from getting stimulated by nicotine, the addictive substance in cigarettes, and so the effects aren’t as pleasing.

Is it safe to use Champix continuously?
The usual course of treatment for Champix is 12 weeks. This can be extended by another 12 weeks if necessary. We would not recommend using it continuously for longer than 24 weeks.
How long will it take for Champix work?
Champix takes approximately one week to build up, and it takes at least five weeks to see the full benefits.
What should I do if I miss a dose?
Take the missed Champix when you remember. If it is nearly time for the next dose, skip the missed tablet. Do not take two tablets together to make up for the missed one.
Can I take Champix and drive?
Champix does not make you drowsy and should not affect your ability to drive or operate machinery. If you do feel drowsy after taking Champix, you should not drive or operate machinery
Side Effects
There is always a risk of side effects with all medications. Some of these can be quite mild and can subside over time. Others are more serious and should be reported to your GP right away if you experience any side effects. Please contact a member of our team if you are concerned about any potential side effects that may occur when taking Champix.
Common side effects may include:
- Vomiting
- Headache
- Dizziness
- Constipation
- Abnormal appetite
- Chest discomfort
- Diarrhoea
- Dry mouth
- Nausea
- Weight changes
If you develop signs of agitation, depressed mood, or suicidal thoughts, you should discontinue use immediately and seek prompt medical advice.
