Wegovy Pill UK
Currently, Wegovy is only available as a weekly injection. However, an oral version of semaglutide — the active ingredient in Wegovy — is being developed for weight loss and is being referred to as the “Wegovy pill”.
Wegovy in tablet form is designed to offer the same appetite-reducing and weight loss benefits as injectable GLP-1 medications, but in a once-daily pill instead of a weekly injection.
In this guide, we explain what the Wegovy pill is, when it may be available in the UK, how it works, and how it compares to both injections and pre-existing tablet options like Rybelsus.
What is the Wegovy Pill?
The Wegovy pill is the name for an oral tablet version of semaglutide created by Novo Nordisk which has been developed and is now in the process of being licensed for weight loss and obesity treatment in the UK.
Semaglutide is a GLP-1 receptor agonist that works by:
- Reducing appetite
- Increasing feelings of fullness (satiety)
- Slowing gastric emptying
These effects help people eat less and lose weight over time.
In the UK, Wegovy currently offers semaglutide via a once-weekly injection. The tablet form aims to provide a needle-free alternative, taken once daily.
We know that for some of our patients at Pharmacy Online, being able to take the medication orally rather than subcutaneously will be a game changer, as it already has been for many in the USA.
The Wegovy oral tablet is designed specifically for:
- Obesity treatment
- Weight management
- Long-term maintenance after weight loss
The needle-free alternative to Wegovy injections-Wegovy in tablet form is coming to the UK. The Wegovy pill, created by Novo Nordisk, comes in an oral tablet version and contains the active ingredient semaglutide, the same active ingredient used in injectable weight loss medications like Wegovy and Ozempic.
Semaglutide is a GLP-1 receptor agonist that represses appetite, increases satiety and slows gastric emptying to aid and enhance weight loss.
The Wegovy weight loss pill is a convenient alternative to subcutaneous Wegovy, because you swallow a tablet once daily and do not have to inject the medication.
How does the Wegovy pill work?

The Wegovy weight loss pill works in the same way that the injection does, it is just consumed in a different way. The tablet contains the same active ingredient as the injection, semaglutide, which emulates the effects of the naturally occurring hormone – GLP-1.
Once consumed, the Wegovy tablet works to aid weight loss by:
- Repressing appetite and increasing satiety
- Slowing gastric emptying
- Regulating blood sugar levels by increasing insulin secretion
How effective are Wegovy pills?
In a major clinical trial carried out by the FDA , the effectiveness of the Wegovy in tablet form and the effectiveness of injections were found to be comparable.
Adults taking the 25mg Wegovy tablet lost an average of around 14% of their body weight over 64 weeks, compared with approximately 15% weight loss in those using the 2.4mg Wegovy injection over a similar period.
It’s important to note that the effectiveness of the tablet is impacted significantly by how it is taken. For optimal absorption, you should:
- Take it first thing in the morning on an empty stomach
- Wait at least 30 minutes before eating, drinking or taking any other medication
- Swallow the tablet whole with water
How long does the Wegovy Pill take to work?
The Wegovy pill is said to start working to reduce your appetite within the first few days to weeks of taking it. Noticeable weight loss will usually start around 4 to 8 weeks after daily use.
Wegovy pill vs injections

The key differences between the Wegovy pill and injections are the method of administration, frequency of administration, storage and rate of absorption (bioavailability).
Wegovy Injection
- Administration: Injection pen
- Frequency: Weekly injection
- Effectiveness: 15–17% average weight loss
- Active ingredient: Semaglutide
- Storage: Requires refrigeration
- Convenience: Fewer doses
- Absorption: More consistent
- Current UK availability: Yes
Wegovy Pill
- Administration: Oral tablet
- Frequency: Daily tablet
- Effectiveness: 14–17% average weight loss
- Active ingredient: Semaglutide
- Storage: No refrigeration necessary
- Convenience: No needles
- Absorption: More sensitive to timing and food
- Current UK availability: No (expected late 2026)
Will the tablet replace the injections?
The Wegovy oral tablet is unlikely to replace injections entirely as different patients have different preferences when it comes to taking weight loss medication.
Some patients will prefer to jab once per week over remembering to take a tablet every day, whereas others who were potentially put off by injections may now feel more comfortable taking the Wegovy pill.
Additionally, a new 2026 study showed oral GLP-1 pills may help people maintain weight loss after stopping injections (BMJ, 2026).
That could become a major future use for the tablets:
- Lose weight on injections
- Maintain on tablets long term
When will the Wegovy Pill be available in the UK?
As of time of writing, the Wegovy pill is still currently in the process of approval with the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) and the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE). Therefore, the exact timeline for UK availability remains uncertain.
However, MHRA-approval of the Wegovy oral tablet is expected by many in the industry to be imminent, and here at Pharmacy Online, we are expecting the pill to be available by summer, 2026.
How weight loss medication approval works in the UK
Before medicines such as the Wegovy pill can be prescribed in the UK, they must first be assessed by the MHRA. The MHRA is responsible for ensuring medicines meet strict standards for safety, quality and effectiveness before they can be licensed for market, sale and supply.
Following MHRA approval, the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) may then review the medication for NHS use in England. NICE assesses factors such as clinical effectiveness and cost-effectiveness before issuing guidance on NHS prescribing.
NICE guidelines do not automatically apply to Scotland; it is the Scottish Medicines Consortium (SMC) who decides which medicines are used.
Because of these review processes, new weight loss medications often become available through private clinics and online pharmacies like Pharmacy Online before wider NHS access is available.
Has the Novo Nordisk Wegovy Pill been approved elsewhere?
The Wegovy oral tablet was approved in the USA in December 2025 and launched to market by January 2026.
In the USA, it was reported that the Wegovy pill saw the fastest take-up in weight loss drug history (Goldstein, 2026).
Wegovy Pill Side Effects
Wegovy tablet side effects are expected to be similar to side effects experienced by those currently using the injection. The reason for this is because both the tablet and injection have the same active ingredient – semaglutide.
Common side effects could include:
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Diarrhoea
- Constipation
- Stomach pain, upset and or bloating
- Headaches
- Tiredness or fatigue
- Dizziness
- Burping and gas
- Heartburn
- Hair Loss
Most of these side effects can be managed at home by:
- Eating little and often throughout the day
- Sleeping at least 8 hours per night
- Staying hydrated
- Taking over-the-counter painkillers for headaches or mild stomach discomfort
- Eating plain foods
- Taking additional vitamins and supplements
If side effects do not improve or you feel as though they are getting worse, you should seek advice from your GP straight away, don’t delay, especially if those side effects include severe stomach pain and or vomiting.
When to avoid Wegovy
It is important to talk to your doctor about the risks and benefits before starting treatment as Wegovy is not right for everyone.
Do not take Wegovy if you have any of the following conditions:
- A history of pancreatitis
- Thyroid problems
- Certain types of cancer
- Pregnancy or breastfeeding
- Allergic to semaglutide or any of the inactive ingredients in Wegovy
You should also talk to your doctor if you have any of the following conditions before starting Wegovy:
- Kidney or liver problems
- Eating disorders
- Mental health problems
- A history of low blood sugar
Wegovy Pill vs Rybelsus
When doing research into the Wegovy pill, you may come across information on another brand medication of semaglutide known as Rybelsus.
This is because the Wegovy pill and Rybelsus both contain semaglutide, but they are considered as two separate brands and approved for different uses. Rybelsus is licensed for type 2 diabetes, while the Wegovy tablet is being developed specifically for obesity and weight management (NCBI, 2024).
Both medications work by mimicking the GLP-1, however, the Wegovy tablet is expected to use higher doses of semaglutide than Rybelsus, which may yield greater weight loss results.
The medications are also likely to be prescribed differently in the UK. Rybelsus is primarily used within diabetes treatment pathways, whereas the Wegovy tablet is expected to be prescribed through weight loss services and online pharmacies.
