FAQ

  • What is a Ventolin inhaler?

Ventolin Evohaler is the brand name for the salbutamol inhaler. It's also known as the blue reliever inhaler.

The Ventolin inhaler is produced by GSK pharmaceuticals and comes packaged in a distinctive blue and white box.

Salbutamol works by widening the lung’s vessels, enabling a better oxygen supply and making it easier for asthma sufferers to breathe.

Ventolin is the branded version of Salbutamol, containing the exact same strength and formulation.

  • What's the difference between salbutamol inhalers and ventolin inhalers?

Salbutamol is the active ingredient in Ventolin inhalers, and is used to treat asthma.

It belongs to a group of medicines known as fast acting bronchodilators. Bronchodilators work quickly to keep airways open and reduce coughing, wheezing, breathlessness and chest tightness.

The active component in Salbutamol inhalers is the same as that in Ventolin inhalers. While Salbutamol inhalers are packaged up in many different brands, including Ventolin, they all function the same way.

Another brand name that uses Salbutamol is Salamol. These inhalers are considerably cheaper than Ventolin Evohalers, however patients don't rate their effectiveness as highly.

  • How do I use Ventolin inhalers?

Always read the instructions on your reliever inhaler, as it will provide you with the precise instructions as to how to use it i.e. how many puffs of ventolin you should take.

As a general rule when using reliever inhalers, there are a few steps to follow:

    1. Stand or sit comfortably
    2. Remove the cover from the blue ventolin inhaler by gently pulling it off
    3. Shake the inhaler
    4. Hold the inhaler upright, placing your thumb underneath the mouthpiece
    5. Exhale
    6. Position the mouthpiece between your teeth and close your lips around it
    7. Inhale through your mouth and press the top of the canister as you breathe deeply
    8. Hold your breath
    9. Remove the inhaler from your mouth and replace the mouth cover

If you need to take another inhale, wait for one to two minutes before repeating the above steps.

The maximum dose each day is four puffs.

Each inhaler contains approximately 200 puffs.

  • How long does Ventolin Evohaler take to relieve asthma symptoms?

When you take a puff of your Ventolin inhaler, it works almost straight away, making your breathing easier.

The Ventolin Evohaler carries on working for about three to five hours afterwards.

  • How long will I need to use my Ventolin inhaler?

Most people will use a Ventolin Evohaler inhaler for many years.
