Eumovate cream is a topical corticosteroid that is used to treat skin inflammation, redness, itchiness, and prevent breakouts of skin conditions such as eczema, nappy rash, dermatitis and many more. It contains the active ingredient clobetasone butyrate 0.05%. It works by reducing inflammation within the skin cells at the site of application.

Eumovate cream belongs to the family of medications known as topical corticosteroids. Eumovate cream contains a steroid called clobetasone butyrate 0.05% that helps to reduce inflammation, itching and redness of eczema and dermatitis.
It's suitable for the short term treatment and control of eczema and dermatitis, including atopic eczema, as well as primary irritant and allergic dermatitis.
It is not suitable as a treatment option for psoriasis.

When should I apply Eumovate?
This medicine will be most effective if applied after a bath or shower. Apply eumovate cream to the affected area twice a day for up to 7 days.
How much should I apply?
This medicine should be applied sparingly. Apply a thin layer - half a fingertip - of Eumovate cream to all red, inflamed skin. Half a fingertip should cover an area the size of your palm.
Quantities of topical cream or ointment are often measured using a ‘fingertip unit’. This is the amount of medicine that is squeezed onto the top of the finger.
Gently rub the cream or ointment into the affected area once or twice a day for up to 7 days. Washing hands immediately after application.
Where should I apply Eumovate cream?
Eumovate cream should be applied thinly and evenly. Do not apply this medicine to the face, groin, to the genitals, or between the toes.
How frequently should I apply Eumovate cream?
Following a successful online consultation, you will be advised to use Eumovate cream either once or twice per day, for up to 7 days. Don't use this medicine for longer than 7 days unless on the advice of your doctor. Don't apply more of this cream or ointment than is necessary.
Does Eumovate begin working immediately?
You should notice improvements to your symptoms within five days of using Eumovate cream. If your condition does not improve within 7 days, speak to your doctor for further treatment options.
If you experience flare ups upon cessation of the product, consult a doctor. The recurrence of pre-existing dermatitis can happen with sudden discontinuation of topical corticosteroids.
Does Eumovate cream contain the active ingredient clobetasone butyrate?
Yes, Eumovate cream contains the active ingredient clobetasone butyrate 0.05%. This is a moderately potent steroid cream that is used to treat eczema and contact dermatitis. It should not be used to treat psoriasis.
Who shouldn't use Eumovate cream?
Don't use Eumovate cream 0.05%:
- If you've ever had an allergic reaction to Eumovate cream or any of its ingredients
- If you're pregnant, breast feeding, or could be pregnant
- On children under the age of 12
- On broken skin, or a skin infection i.e. athlete's foot, cold sores, chronic ulcers, or skin lesions
- To treat skin conditions like psoriasis, acne vulgaris, rosacea, or pruritus without rash
- On your face, on your groin or genitals, or between your toes - these are areas susceptible to fungal infections
- With occlusive dressings
- If you're using other corticosteroids
Side Effects
There is always a risk of side effects with all prescription medicines. Some of these can be quite mild and can subside over time. Others are more serious and should be reported to your GP right away if you experience any side effects. Common side effects include:
- Thinning of the skin
- Burning, itching, or irritation at the site of application
- Increased hair growth
- Changes in skin colour
Stop using Eumovate and seek medical attention if your condition is not improving, or if you develop small, pus-filled blisters under the skin.
Manifestations of hypercortisolism (Cushing's syndrome) can occur following prolonged use of topical steroids, or when the cream or ointment is applied to broken skin.
