FAQ
What is Trimovate cream?
Trimovate cream contains three active ingredients to help treat skin conditions including eczema, psoriasis and contact dermatitis.
The three ingredients in Trimovate cream are Clobetasone butyrate, Oxytetracycline, and Nystatin:
- Clobetasone Butyrate 0.05% – a synthetic topical corticosteroid which reduces inflammation and pain by producing an immune response within skin cells, stopping them releasing inflammatory substances that cause inflammatory skin conditions.
- Oxytetracycline 3.0% – an antibacterial agent that works to prevent the growth of bacterial infection by inhibiting the bacteria's ability to produce a protein that is essential for them to grow. Without this protein, bacteria can't grow, replicate or spread.
- Nystatin 100,000 per gram – an antifungal agent that prevents the growth of fungi and the spread of a yeast infection by interfering with yeast's cell membranes.
Unlike other treatments for skin conditions, Trimovate cream can be used up to four times a day, and treatment can last up to two weeks.
Can I use Trimovate cream on open cuts and sores?
It is not recommended to use Trimovate cream on broken skin. If there are open cuts in the skin, Trimovate cream can cause extreme irritation in these areas, which is why we do not recommend using it on sensitive areas of skin.
How often can I apply Trimovate cream?
A thin layer of Trimovate cream can be applied sparingly up to 4 times a day, for a maximum of 2 weeks.
Take care not to get cream on the surrounding healthy skin as the topical corticosteroid can cause skin thinning.
Once symptoms have reduced, stop using the treatment, or switch to less potent steroid creams.
Trimovate cream is not suitable for continuous treatment. If you haven't seen any improvement in your skin condition, or symptoms worsen, your topical medication should be reviewed by your doctor or pharmacist.
Can I use my regular emollient cream while using Trimovate cream?
Yes, absolutely. We recommend you keep up with your emollient treatment whilst using Trimovate as the skin will benefit from added moisturising to combat dry skin conditions.
Can I use Trimovate cream on a confirmed skin infection caused by bacterial or fungal infection?
Yes. Trimovate treats several skin conditions with additional bacterial or fungal infection. It is most commonly prescribed for:
- eczema (atopic, seborrhoeic & contact dermatitis)
- nappy rash
- intertrigo
- impetigo
- anogenital pruritus
- psoriasis
When used correctly, you'll find it not only treat infections, but it will reduce inflammation and other uncomfortable symptoms too.
Who shouldn't use Trimovate cream?
Do not use Trimovate cream if:
- You have a known allergy to any of the ingredients
- You have a primary viral infection of the skin
- Have primary skin lesions caused by bacterial, fungal or yeast infections
- Have confirmed skin infection such as Acinetobacter species, methicillin resistant staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), pseudomonas species, proteus species Serratia species, or Streptococcus B
- You want to treat rosacea
Side Effects
Side effects of Trimovate cream are not very common, but that's not to say they don't exist.
Trimovate cream may cause local skin reactions including irritation of the skin, inflamed skin, rash, thin skin, and slight burning sensations.
Less commonly, Trimovate cream may cause excessive hair growth, increased body hair, or a worsening of symptoms.
Some patients may also experience opportunistic skin infections.
