FAQ
What is Avamys nasal spray?
Avamys nasal spray is a steroid nasal spray designed to combat the symptoms of allergic rhinitis, including itchy nose, runny nose, blocked nose, and sneezing. This is a prescription only medicine suitable for use by anyone over the age of six years old. It contains 27.5 micrograms of the corticosteroid Fluticasone Furoate, per spray.
How does Avamys nasal spray work?
Avamys nasal spray contains the corticosteroid fluticasone furoate, which attaches to the receptors in the nose, helping decrease the immune system's response to allergens.
By reducing the response to allergens, you experience fewer hay fever symptoms such as itchy nose, itchy eyes, runny nose and blocked nose.
How do I use Avamys nasal spray?
Before using Avamys nasal spray, blow your nose gently to ensure no nasal congestion.
Tilt your head forward and insert the tip of the bottle nozzle into each nostril, gently spray twice in each nostril.
If you're unsure how to use this medicine, speak to your doctor or pharmacist, or read the patient information leaflet.
Is it safe to use a nasal spray and oral antihistamines at the same time?
Yes, it’s perfectly safe to use both types of treatment simultaneously.
What’s the difference between Avamys and Flixonase?
Avamys and Flixonase both contain the same active ingredient: fluticasone furoate. Because of this, they’re very similar, although some reports suggest that Avamys generally works faster.
Because this contains a steroid, is it dangerous?
Systemic effects of nasal corticosteroid can occur if high doses of this medicine are used for prolonged periods.
However, these effects are much less likely to occur than with oral corticosteroids and may vary in individual patients.
What is the dosage of Avamys nasal spray?
For adults and children over the age of 12, the recommended dose is two sprays into each nostril, once daily.
Once symptoms have reduced, the dose can be lowered to one spray in each nostril once daily.
For children between the ages of 6-11, the usual starting dose is one spray, once daily, into each nostril to ease nasal congestion.
Who shouldn't use Avamys nasal spray?
Do not use this medicine if you've ever experienced a serious allergic reaction to any medicine.
Speak with your doctor or pharmacist if you:
- have liver problems
- have glaucoma or cataracts
