Rizatriptan is an oral medication used for migraines. Whilst this medication can alleviate the symptoms of a migraine; it does not treat it. It belongs to a family of medication called triptans. They work by reducing the pain signals which are sent to the brain by blocking specific receptors. It also helps reduce the effects of nausea and sensitivity to stimulus, such as light. This medication is effective when taken at the earliest opportunity from when a migraine begins.

Rizatriptan, sold under the brand name Maxalt, is a medication used to narrow the blood vessels in the brain, which can help to reduce pressure and relieve the symptoms of migraine attacks.
FAQ
How do I take Rizatriptan Tablets?
Take one Rizatriptan 10mg tablet, as soon as possible, at the onset of a migraine. You can repeat the dose after 2 hours if the migraine has not subsided.
Can I use other migraine treatments with Rizatriptan Tablets?
You can use painkillers and anti-sickness treatments with Rizatriptan
These include paracetamol, ibuprofen or aspirin-based painkillers.
Should I take Rizatriptan (Imigran) with food?
There are no specific requirements to take Rizatriptan with, or without, food.
Is Rizatriptan affected by alcohol, antibiotics or the contraceptive pill?
You may want to avoid alcohol during a migraine as this could make it worse. However, it will not make Rizatriptan less effective.
Although Rizatriptan is not affected by the contraceptive pill, migraines can be linked to hormonal changes during your period.
Does Rizatriptan medication work on regular headaches?
This treatment often relieves other symptoms that occur together with a migraine headache, such as nausea, tension, vomiting and sensitivity to light. If you have a regular headache, you should use ordinary painkillers like paracetamol.
Can you drive while taking Rizatriptan medication?
Rizatriptan can make you feel tired or sleepy. If this happens, avoid driving or using heavy machinery for your safety.
Side Effects
The side effects of Rizatriptan can include pain, heaviness, pressure or tightness in the chest, throat or other parts of the body, or unusual sensations, including numbness, tingling and warmth or cold. These effects may be intense but generally pass quickly.
Other common side effects include:
- Feeling sick (nausea) or being sick (vomiting), although this may be due to the migraine itself
- Tiredness or drowsiness
- Dizziness, feeling weak or getting hot flushes
- Temporary increase in blood pressure
- Shortness of breath
