Estriol cream is a hormone-based treatment for women going through menopause. The shortage of estrogen during menopause may cause the vaginal wall and its lining to become dry and thin. This can lead to pain during intercourse and an increase in itching/irritation, which can cause infections. By replacing estrogen via the vaginal cream Estriol, the patient can see a reduction in symptoms and maintain balance during menopause.

When to Use Estriol Cream?

Estriol cream is one of the most effective treatments for menopausal women, and it treats vaginal atrophy. The condition is caused by drops in estrogen levels, which occur after menopause.

You can use the cream to treat a variety of symptoms, including:

  • Vaginal Dryness and Irritation: Estriol keeps your vagina lubricated and elasticated, which prevents the walls from thinning and reduces discomfort.
  • Painful Intercourse: Many menopausal women experience pain during intercourse, but Estriol enhances lubrication.
  • Soreness and Itching: Low oestrogen levels might also cause vaginal soreness and itching, but applying Estriol cream can relieve your symptoms.

Your doctor may also prescribe Estriol after vaginal surgery, as it can promote wound healing.

Age Restrictions of Estriol Cream

Estriol cream is prescribed to both perimenopausal and menopausal women, so there are no age restrictions as such. If you're experiencing menopausal symptoms, the cream may be suitable for you, but it's rarely prescribed for younger women.

How to Use Estriol 0.01% Cream?

Estriol cream comes in a pack with a clear plastic applicator, which is used to apply the cream to your vagina.

The applicator has a ring marked on the body, indicating where to fill the cream up for the correct dose. See the section of this page called 'How to use Estriol for more information.

When to Avoid Estriol Cream?

Estriol cream is, in most cases - a safe treatment for menopausal women, but there are some situations where you may be unable to use it. These include:

  • Cancer History: If there's a personal or family history of breast cancer, ovarian cancer or endometrial cancer, you should avoid using Estriol, as it can trigger estrogen-sensitive cancers.
  • Vaginal Bleeding: Abnormal vaginal bleeding may be caused by an underlying condition, so it's essential to see a doctor to rule out other conditions first.
  • Blood Clots: People with a history of blood clots are at higher risk when using estrogen cream.
  • Liver Disease: If you have liver disease or have suffered from it in the past, you should avoid using Estriol cream.
  • Allergies: Please seek alternative treatments if you have an allergy or are sensitive to any of the ingredients in Estriol.

Precautions of Estriol Cream

  • High Blood Pressure: Estrogen can result in fluid retention, which may increase your blood pressure. Please ask your doctor before using Estriol Cream, as it can be dangerous for people with elevated blood pressure.
  • Diabetes: Hormone therapy can also interfere with your blood sugar levels, so you may need frequent medical check-ups.
  • Migraine Disorders: If you suffer from migraines, estrogen can increase your symptoms.
  • Other Conditions: Individuals with gallstones, endometriosis, endometrial hyperplasia, and other medical conditions should also seek medical advice before using HRT.

Please review the Patient Information Leaflet for a full list of ingredients.

Side Effects of Estriol Cream

When you use Estriol cream, you may experience irritation of the skin, itchiness, vaginal discharge, bleeding, spotting, swollen, tender breasts and headaches. Some patients may also experience nausea and vomiting.

Why would I choose a vaginal cream such as Estriol cream over oral tablets?

By using Estriol cream, you can lower plasma estrogen levels and more effectively control localised symptoms than a tablet.

How long does Estriol cream take to work?

The Estriol cream can take several days or even weeks to be effective. It is best to use the cream regularly for the results to be most effective.

What is Estriol Cream?

Estriol cream treats the vaginal symptoms of menopause – it is a common choice of topical treatment used to treat symptoms such as vaginal inflammation, dryness and painful sex. Menopause causes your sex hormones to decline gradually. Symptoms occur due to the decline in the main female sex hormone, oestrogen. Estriol is a type of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) which helps women manage their symptoms better by replacing the declining hormones.

How does Estriol cream work?

Topical hormone replacement therapy like Estriol cream improves vaginal symptoms, which are caused by a lack of oestrogen. The cream's active ingredient is Estriol, a type of oestrogen. It is one of three main oestrogens produced by your body. This adds extra oestrogen to your vagina, which helps to relieve symptoms.

Is Estriol cream safe to use long-term?

Estriol cream is usually safe for long-term use. However, your doctor will assess your individual circumstances and decide whether you can benefit from long-term usage.

Can I use Estriol cream alongside other HRT treatments?

In most cases, yes, you can. Estriol Cream is a local treatment, so it can be used with HRT patches and tablets. Again, you should always seek advice from a medical professional before combining HRT treatments.

How often should I apply Estriol cream?

You'll usually start by applying Estriol Cream once a day for the first few weeks of treatment, then move to a maintenance dose. This is typically two to three times weekly, depending on your symptoms.

Can I use Estriol cream during sex?

Using Estriol cream before sexual activity can impact your partner, so it's best to apply it before bed or when you know you won't be engaging in sexual activity.

What happens if I miss a dose of Estriol cream?

If you forget to apply a dose, you can use it as soon as you remember. However, skip the missed dose if you're closer to the next application and never use a double dose.
