Azithromycin
Azithromycin is an antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections such as chlamydia when doxycycline is unsuitable. You can use it for three days, and generally, it eradicates the infection within seven days. Azithromycin treats chlamydia by killing the bacteria that cause it. Suitable for adults over age of 16.

Azithromycin belongs to a medicine class known as macrolide antibiotics and is used in the treatment of bacterial infections, namely chlamydia. Symptoms, if any, begin to clear after a few days.
Dosage to treat chlamydia:
1g to be taken on day one as a single dose, followed by 500mg on days two and three. This 3-day course follows UK sexual health (BASHH) guidance. It is different from the dose in the leaflet, which is a single 1g dose.
There is always a risk of side effects with all medications. Some of these can be quite mild and can subside over time. Others are more serious and should be reported to your GP right away if you experience any side effects. Please contact a member of our team if you are concerned about any potential side effects that may occur when taking azithromycin.
Common side effects include:
- Diarrhoea
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Abdominal pain
- Flushing of the skin
- Dizziness
You should stop taking this medication immediately if you show any signs of an allergic reaction, including difficulty breathing or talking, swelling of the tongue, and/or rash.
Can I still have sex while I am taking Azithromycin?
You should not have sex (vaginal, oral or anal), even with a condom, until you and your sexual partner(s) have finished treatment and 7 days have passed since you finished your azithromycin course. This helps stop the infection being passed on or coming back. If you have had sex during this time, speak to us or a sexual health clinic, as you and your partner may need to be tested and treated again.
Can I drink alcohol whilst taking Azithromycin?
There is no known interaction between alcohol and Azithromycin. If you have side effects such as nausea or an upset stomach, it is best to avoid alcohol until you feel better.
Will diarrhoea or sickness affect treatment?
The chances of antibiotics not working properly after vomiting or experiencing diarrhoea depend on how long ago you took the medication. If you vomited within two hours of taking the medication, there is a high chance that the treatment wasn’t properly absorbed into your system. Equally, if you experience diarrhoea after taking this treatment, there is a chance that it was not absorbed.
