Azithromycin is an antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections such as chlamydia when doxycycline is unsuitable. You can use it for three days, and generally, it eradicates the infection within seven days. Azithromycin treats chlamydia by killing the bacteria that cause it. Suitable for adults over age of 16.

Azithromycin belongs to a medicine class known as macrolide antibiotics and is used in the treatment of bacterial infections, namely chlamydia. Symptoms, if any, begin to clear after a few days.
Dosage to treat Chlamidiya:
1g to be taken on day one as a single dose, followed by 500mg on days two and three.
There is always a risk of side effects with all medications. Some of these can be quite mild and can subside over time. Others are more serious and should be reported to your GP right away if you experience any side effects. Please contact a member of our team if you are concerned about any potential side effects that may occur when taking azithromycin.
Common side effects include:
- Diarrhoea
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Abdominal pain
- Flushing of the skin
- Dizziness
You should stop taking this medication immediately if you show any signs of an allergic reaction, including difficulty breathing or talking, swelling of the tongue, and/or rash.
Can I still have sex while I am taking Azithromycin?
If you decide to engage in sexual activity whilst undergoing chlamydia treatment, you must make your partner aware of the risks. Make sure you use a condom to help avoid transmitting the infection. If you suspect a condom has split, make sure your partner gets testing for chlamydia and that they also receive treatment.
Can I drink alcohol whilst taking Azithromycin?
No - alcohol can reduce the effectiveness of Azithromycin, and so the infection might not entirely clear.
Will diarrhoea or sickness affect treatment?
The chances of antibiotics not working properly after vomiting or experiencing diarrhoea depend on how long ago you took the medication. If you vomited within two hours of taking the medication, there is a high chance that the treatment wasn’t properly absorbed into your system. Equally, if you experience diarrhoea after taking this treatment, there is a chance that it was not absorbed.
