Cerazette

Cerazette pill is a hormonal-based, progestogen-only contraceptive pill that prevents pregnancy. The contraceptive pill mimics the naturally produced female hormone progesterone. Cerazette prevents your ovaries from releasing an egg each month (ovulation). While taking Cerazette, your bleeding pattern may change - bleeding may happen at irregular intervals, or you may have no bleeding at all. The mini pill is suitable for women up to 55 years old and contains the active ingredient Desogestrel.

  • For female use only
  • Used for contraceptive purposes
  • Mini-pill known as a progesterone-only pill

Contraceptive pills can be used to prevent pregnancy, and when taken correctly is 99% effective.

Cerazette is a progestogen-only pill (mini pill). You take one tablet every day at about the same time, with no break between packs - when you finish a pack of 28 tablets, you start the next pack the following day.

While taking Cerazette, vaginal bleeding may happen at irregular intervals, or you may have no bleeding at all. This is common and does not mean Cerazette is not working, but speak to your doctor if bleeding is heavy or lasts a long time.

Before taking an oral contraceptive pill, it is important to measure your weight, as well as take readings of your blood pressure, as these can affect which pill is best for you. You can purchase home blood pressure kits or visit a local pharmacy to get a free blood pressure check. You will also be asked questions regarding your health history, including migraines, smoking, a family history of stroke or heart attack, and breast cancer.

There is always a risk of side effects with all medications. Some of these can be quite mild and can subside over time. Others are more serious and should be reported to your GP right away if you experience any side effects. Please contact a member of our team if you are concerned about any potential side effects that may occur when taking oral contraceptives.

Common side effects include:

  • Spotting in the first few months
  • Headaches
  • Mood changes
  • Weight changes
  • Nausea
  • Breast tenderness
  • Changes in libido

There are some serious side effects associated with taking oral contraceptives. Seek medical attention if you experience any of the following:

  • Changes to the breast such as discolouration around the nipple or lumps
  • Swelling in the lower leg that is inflamed and hot to the touch
  • Discomfort and bleeding after sex
What should I do if I miss a dose of the Cerazette pill?

If you miss a dose of the Cerazette pill, you should take it as soon as you remember. If you are less than 12 hours late, take the missed pill and take your next pill at the usual time - you are still protected from pregnancy. If you are more than 12 hours late, take the missed pill as soon as you remember and use extra protection such as condoms for the next 7 days. If you missed pills in the first week of starting Cerazette and had sex in the week before, you could be pregnant - speak to our team, as you may need emergency contraception.

When should I start taking the Cerazette pill?

If possible, begin taking the mini-pill on the first day of your period, and you will be protected from pregnancy straight away. You can also start on days 2 to 5 of your period, but you should use extra protection such as condoms for the first 7 days. If you begin later in your cycle, you will need to use other methods of protection like condoms.

Can I use this mini-pill when breastfeeding?

Yes, Cerazette can be used while you are breastfeeding. It does not appear to affect how much breast milk you make or its quality, although there have been infrequent reports of reduced milk production, and a small amount of the medicine passes into the milk. After having a baby, you can start Cerazette between 21 and 28 days after the birth. Speak to a member of the team about the options available to you.

Can oral contraceptives such as the mini pill cause breast cancer?

Some types of the pill have been linked to an increased risk of developing breast cancer. If you have a family history of breast cancer, our dedicated team can help you choose a contraceptive option that is appropriate for you.

Does the contraceptive pill cause weight gain?

Side effects differ from person to person when using oral contraceptives. Weight gain may occur but can be managed with regular exercise and a balanced diet.

Will mini pills affect my fertility?

Normal fertility resumes as soon as you stop taking the mini pills.
