What Earol Olive Oil Spray is for

Earol softens ear wax. Used for a few days, it can help the wax come out of your ear naturally, so you may not need to have it removed. If you do need it removed, softened wax makes that easier for the doctor or nurse doing it. The leaflet calls that removal "syringing", which means flushing the ear with water.

It suits adults and children over 12. You spray it into your outer ear.

Next step: use it for 4 or 5 days before any appointment to have wax removed. Your doctor or nurse can then tell you whether to keep using it once a week.

Is it right for you?

Do not use it:

• if you are sensitive or allergic to olive oil
• on a baby under 1 year old, unless a doctor has told you to

Use it only with a doctor's guidance if:

• you have ear pain
• you have a hole in your eardrum (a perforated eardrum)

For a child between 1 and 12, ask a pharmacist or doctor before using it. The leaflet gives a dose for adults and children over 12 only.

Pregnant or breastfeeding? The leaflet says there are no known harmful effects. It still says you should always tell your doctor before you use it.

What it is and how it works

It is olive oil in a small spray bottle. Each press of the button gives a set amount of oil (a metered dose). The leaflet says this makes it easy to use, helps you avoid using too much, and cuts down on spills and mess. The oil softens the wax, which helps it work its way out.

How to use it

Before you use a new bottle, get the spray working. Warm the bottle in the palm of your hand and shake it well. Then press the button down 3 or 4 times until it sprays. Point it away from yourself and anyone else while you do this.

Each time you use it:

1. Warm the bottle in your hand and shake it well. It works best warm.
2. Gently pull the top of your ear up and back.
3. Hold the bottle upright and put the nozzle in the opening of your ear canal.
4. Press the button down fully, once or twice.
5. Gently rub the small bump of skin just in front of your ear (the tragus).
6. Do the other ear too, if it needs it.

How often: for adults and children over 12, 1 or 2 sprays in each affected ear, twice a day, for 4 or 5 days before your wax removal appointment. After that, your doctor or nurse may suggest once a week to stop wax building up again. Always use it the way your doctor or nurse tells you to.

After use, you can pull the button off and rinse it in hot water. Push it back onto the stem when you are done.

The leaflet says to throw the bottle away 3 months after you first start using it every day.

Callout (amber / warning): For your ears only. Do not spray it near your eyes, nose or mouth. Do not spray it near a naked flame. The bottle is for one person only - do not share it.

What it will not do

• It is not for ear pain. If your ear hurts, use it only if a doctor says so.
