The Estradot patch is a hormone replacement therapy (HRT) patch you apply to the skin. These oestrogen patches increase hormone levels to alleviate the unwanted symptoms of menopause, such as poor sleep, hot flashes, mood swings, vaginal dryness and reduced libido. The Estradot patch is suitable for postmenopausal women and contains the active ingredient estradiol (a naturally occurring oestrogen).

HRT patches are often oestrogen-only or can contain both hormones, oestrogen and progesterone. HRT patches can be used by women who don’t want to take daily tablets or experience negative side effects with oral therapy alternatives.

When to Use Estradot Patches?

Estradot is an effective treatment for perimenopause and menopause symptoms. If you fall into one of the following categories, using the patches can be beneficial:

  • Menopausal Symptoms: Menopause causes oestrogen levels to decrease, but Estradot can compact symptoms like hot flashes, sleep disturbances, night sweats, and mood changes.
  • Low Oestrogen Levels: Women who have low oestrogen levels can also use Estradot. This includes if you've had a hysterectomy or are experiencing premature menopause.
  • Osteoporosis Prevention: If you are at high risk of osteoporosis and fractures, your doctor might recommend Estradot.

Age Restrictions

As a form of hormone replacement therapy, Estradot doesn't have set age limits. Instead, your eligibility to use it depends on whether you're experiencing menopausal symptoms.

In most cases, it's suitable for women who are of standard menopause age or those experiencing premature menopausal symptoms.

How to Use Estradot Patches?

Please follow these instructions when using Estradot:

  1. Preparation: Make sure your hands are clean and find a hairless patch of skin below the waistline. Popular areas include the lower abdomen, buttock, or thigh.
  2. Application: Open the pouch carefully and avoid cutting it. Remove the protective backing from your patch, then press the sticky side onto your skin. Remove the rest of the backing and hold the patch to your skin for 10 seconds.
  3. Using the Patch: You should wear the patch at all times, including while swimming, showering, and bathing. However, if you're out in the sun, it's important to cover the patch up and ensure it's not exposed to direct sunlight.
  4. Changing the Patch: You should change your Estradot patch twice a week (every three to four days).

When to Avoid Estradot?

Estradot patches are usually safe, but all forms of HRT come with some risks.

If any of the following apply to you, avoid using them or seek medical advice.

Avoid Estradot if:

  • You have a history of breast cancer or estrogen-dependent tumours, as hormone replacement patches can stimulate cancer growth.
  • You're experiencing unexplained vaginal bleeding - a doctor should assess your symptoms and test for underlying conditions first.
  • You have or are being tested for endometrial hyperplasia (thickened womb lining).
  • You're at higher risk of developing blood clots or have a blood clotting disorder.
  • You have cardiovascular disease or liver problems.
  • You're allergic to any of the ingredients in Estradot.

Precautions

Please contact your doctor for advice before using Estradot if:

  • There's a history of breast cancer in your family.
  • You've been diagnosed with a benign breast condition before - such as cysts, nodules, and lumps.
  • You have endometriosis, as high amounts of estrogen can worsen your symptoms.
  • You've been diagnosed with benign uterine tumours or fibroids.
  • There's a family history of blood clots, or you're at increased risk of developing them.
  • You have high blood pressure - your doctor will want to get it under control before prescribing Estradot.
  • You've had a seizure before or have epilepsy.
  • You're experiencing severe headaches or migraines and don't have a previous diagnosis of them.

Ingredients

Estradot patches contain estradiol (as hemihydrate) as the active ingredient. The amount depends on the strength you use, with average patches containing 25 to 100 mcg. Inactive ingredients include adhesives and backing layers.

Side Effects of Estradot

There are side effects associated with any form of medication. Oestrogen-only HRT patches can cause some unwanted side effects; however, these can often subside over time. If you’re experiencing serious side effects whilst using HRT patches, you should contact your doctor straight away. Contact a member of our team if you’re worried about potential side effects that can occur before starting your treatment.

Side effects of oestrogen-only HRT patches may include:

  • Changes to your vaginal discharge
  • Irregular menstrual cycles
  • Cramping or stomach pains
  • Weight gain or weight loss
  • Severe mood swings
Where do you apply an oestrogen patch to ease menopausal symptoms?

HRT patches need to be applied to clean, dry skin. You should apply your patch to a hair-free area of your lower stomach. Do not apply a new patch to the same area as your previous patch.

What are the risks involved in using hormone replacement therapy (HRT)?

Like all hormone replacement therapy treatments, there can be some risks involved with oestrogen-only HRT patches. Although these risks are very rare, they can occur and should be considered before commencing treatment. Regular check-ups with your doctor whilst using HRT should help to reduce and monitor risks causing any health complications.

How often should I change my Estradot patch?

Estradot patches should be worn for three to four days. After this time, a new patch must be applied.

What should I do if my patch falls off?

If the patch falls off or comes loose, try to stick it back on and use a different area. However, if your patch won't stick, please apply a new one.

What if I forget to change my patch on time?

Please apply a new patch when you remember and continue your normal schedule. Never double up on patches.

Can I cut the Estradot patch if the prescribed dose is lower?

No, because the patch is designed to release estrogen from a specific area. If you find the dose you're using too high or you experience side effects, please ask your doctor or pharmacist for a lower dosage.

Can Estradot increase my risk of breast cancer?

Oestrogen-only HRT has little or no breast cancer risks - but combined HRT patches can slightly increase your risks. However, if you've had breast cancer in the past or there's a family history, please seek medical advice before using Estradot.

Do I need to take progesterone too?

Taking progesterone along with oestrogen is beneficial if you still have a uterus, as taking oestrogen alone can increase the risks of endometrial conditions.

Your doctor will assess your symptoms - including whether there's a history of endometriosis - and then develop the best treatment schedule for your needs.

How should I dispose of used patches?

After removing your used Estradot patch, please fold it in half to ensure the sticky sides don't stick to other objects. Then, you can place it in your general household waste bin.

Avoid flushing it down the toilet, as doing so could impact the environment. Remember to always keep used patches away from pets and children.

Can I wear the patch while using heat pads or tanning beds?

You should avoid direct heat, including sunlight and sunbeds, as it can speed up absorption and increase your hormone levels.

This may lead to a range of side effects, including migraines, tender breasts, and hot flashes.

Can Estradot affect other medications?

Estradot may interact with some medications, including epilepsy, HIV, and tuberculosis treatments. It's essential to inform your doctor of any medications you're currently using, including OTC medicines and supplements.
