Femodene ED
Femodene ED (every day) is a contraceptive hormonal-based tablet that regulates a woman's cycle and helps prevents unwanted pregnancies. It also prevents the womb's lining from thickening so an egg can't develop. Femodene ED is suitable for females as a form of birth control. It contains oestrogen and progestogen.
- For female use only
- Combined pill for contraceptive purposes
- Reduces menstrual symptoms
Contraceptive pills are usually taken for around 21 days and then require a 7-day break. During this break women often experience a breakthrough bleed which resembles a normal period.
Other forms of contraceptive pills, such as the Femodene ED contraceptive pill, are taken every day without a break. Each strip has 21 active pills followed by 7 inactive pills, and you will usually have a period-like bleed while you are taking the inactive pills.
Before taking the Femodene ED contraceptive pill, it is important to measure your weight, as well as take readings of your blood pressure, as these can affect which pill is best for you. You can purchase home blood pressure kits or visit a local pharmacy to get a free blood pressure check. You will also be asked questions regarding your health history, including migraines, smoking, a family history of stroke or heart attack, and breast cancer.
When taking any form of medication such as the Femodene pill, there can be a risk of developing certain side effects. Most side effects related to Femodene ED are mild and should go away over time. Other more serious side effects, although rare, can cause health issues that can be difficult to manage. These more severe side effects need to be reported to your GP straight away. If you have any questions or concerns regarding the contraceptive pill, speak to a member of the Pharmacy Online team who will be happy to provide expert advice on different contraception alternatives.
Common side effects include:
- Weight fluctuations
- Vomiting or nausea
- Changes in sex drive
- Mood swings
- Breast tenderness
- Acne
- Light bleeding or spotting
It’s important to be aware of some serious side effects that can be brought on by using the Femodene pill. You should talk to your doctor if you experience any of these symptoms:
- Changes to breast appearance, like discolouration around the nipple or lumps around the breasts
- Swelling in your lower legs that are inflamed and hot to the touch
- Signs of a blood clot in the lung, such as sudden unexplained breathlessness or rapid breathing, a sudden cough that may bring up blood, or sharp chest pain that may get worse when you breathe deeply
- Signs of a heart attack, such as chest pain, discomfort, pressure or heaviness, or discomfort spreading to the back, jaw, throat, arm or stomach
- Signs of a stroke, such as sudden weakness or numbness of the face, arm or leg (especially on one side of the body), sudden confusion or trouble speaking, or a sudden, severe headache
- Discomfort and bleeding after sex
Like all combined pills, Femodene ED slightly increases your risk of a blood clot. Out of 10,000 women who are not using a combined pill and are not pregnant, about 2 will develop a blood clot in a year. This compares with about 5-7 in 10,000 women using a combined pill containing levonorgestrel, and about 9-12 in 10,000 women using a pill containing gestodene, such as Femodene ED. Seek urgent medical help if you notice any signs of a blood clot.
What should I do if I miss a dose of the Femodene ED contraceptive pill?
If you accidentally miss a dose one day during the month, then you’ll need to take Femodene ED combined pill as soon as you can. If you are less than 12 hours late, you will still be protected from pregnancy - keep taking your pills at the usual time, even if this means taking two in one day. If you are more than 12 hours late, or you have missed more than one active pill, take the most recently missed pill as soon as you remember and use extra contraception, such as condoms, for the next 7 days. If there are fewer than 7 active pills left in your strip, skip the inactive pills and start the next strip straight away. If you have missed pills in the first week of a strip and had sex in that week, speak to a doctor, nurse or pharmacist as soon as possible, as you may need emergency contraception. If you miss one of the inactive pills, you can ignore it, as your protection is not affected.
When should I start taking Femodene ED?
If possible, begin taking the Femodene ED pill on the first day of your period, as this means you will be protected from pregnancy straight away. If you begin on any other day of your cycle, you should use other methods of protection like condoms for the first 7 days.
Can I use the Femodene ED pill when breastfeeding?
If you are breastfeeding, Femodene ED is not usually recommended, as combined pills may reduce the amount of breast milk. Speak to a member of the team about other options, such as a progestogen-only pill. If you are not breastfeeding, your doctor may advise you to start Femodene ED 21 days after giving birth. Use extra contraception, such as condoms, until you start Femodene ED and for the first 7 days of taking it.
Can Femodene ED cause breast cancer?
There have been links between particular forms of the contraceptive pill and the increased risk of developing breast cancer. Individuals who have a family history of breast cancer will need to seek medical advice before they commence any form of contraceptive pills in order to evaluate potential risks. The Pharmacy Online team is on hand to offer advice for potential contraceptive alternatives.
Does the Femodene ED pill cause weight gain?
When using any form of hormonal contraception, there is a risk of experiencing weight gain. However, weight gain can be prevented and managed with a healthy diet and regular exercise.
Will the Femodene ED pill affect my fertility?
Often, once you stop taking the pill, your normal fertility levels should resume.
When I buy Femodene ED online, how effective is it in preventing pregnancy?
When taken correctly, the Femodene pill can be up to 99% effective in preventing conception. However, the pill does not protect against contracting STIs and so you should use another form of contraception, such as condoms, in order to reduce the risk.
Leaflets
