Our pharmacists will then prescribe you either Lansoprazole 30 mg or 15 mg, depending on your specific needs. You may also be prescribed a different medication depending on what our professionals advise is best for you.
When to Use Lansoprazole?
Its active ingredient is a Proton Pump Inhibitor (PPI), which works by preventing the body from producing stomach acid. With less acid produced in the stomach, the ability to reflux acid upwards through the respiratory tract is reduced.
Lansoprazole tablets are most effective when taken once daily.
Lansoprazole 15mg and 30mg capsules and orodispersible tablets are effective proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) that reduce the amount of acid your stomach produces.
Unlike traditional PPIs, Lansoprazole orodispersible tablets dissolve on the tongue, which is beneficial if you struggle with taking tablets.
The tablets are most beneficial for:
- Indigestion and Acid Reflux: Relief from the symptoms of acid reflux and indigestion.
- Preventing Reflux Symptoms: The tablets can also help prevent acid reflux symptoms from returning.
- Protection Against NSAIDs: NSAID medications are known to increase the risks of ulcers, but Lansoprazole can prevent stomach ulcers.
- Healing Stomach or Duodenal Ulcers: If you have a stomach or duodenal ulcer, your doctor may prescribe 30mg Lansoprazole once a day - usually for 2 to 4 weeks for a duodenal ulcer and 4 to 8 weeks for a stomach ulcer. The lower 15mg dose is used to help prevent ulcers in people who need to keep taking NSAID painkillers.
Age Restrictions For Lansoprazole Tablets
Lansoprazole is licensed for adults only. It is not recommended for children, as there is limited information on its use in them, and it should not be given to babies under 1 year.
How to Use Lansoprazole?
When using Lansoprazole, it's best to take your dose in the morning. You should take it at least 30 minutes before your first meal of the day, as the stomach's acid pumps are most active then.
If you have the capsules, swallow them whole with a glass of water. If you have the orodispersible tablets, please follow these steps:
- Put the tablet on your tongue and gently suck it. It quickly breaks up in your mouth, releasing tiny coated granules.
- Do not chew the granules - their coating protects the medicine from your stomach acid.
- Swallow the granules with a glass of water. If you cannot swallow, the tablet can be dispersed in a small amount of water and given by oral syringe or feeding tube.
When to Avoid Using Lansoprazole?
If you fall into any of these categories, you should avoid taking Lansoprazole:
- Allergies or Sensitivities: If you've had an allergic reaction to Lansoprazole or other PPIs, avoid using them.
- HIV Medicines: Lansoprazole works by reducing stomach acid, which can prevent you from absorbing HIV medicines like rilpivirine correctly. Taking Lansoprazole with the HIV medicines atazanavir or nelfinavir is not recommended.
- Phenylketonuria (PKU): Individuals with PKU have to limit their aspartame intake, so you may not be able to use Lansoprazole.
Precautions For Lansoprazole Tablets
If any of the following apply, you should speak to your healthcare provider before using Lansoprazole:
- Liver Disease: Individuals with liver disease are more at risk of PPIs building up in their system.
- Osteoporosis: Using PPIs for a year or longer can weaken the bones and increase the risk of osteoporosis.
- Magnesium Deficiency: Your GP may recommend a magnesium supplement if you have low levels, as Lansoprazole can further reduce them.
- Vitamin B12 Deficiency: Supressing your acid levels long term can reduce the amount of Vitamin B12 you absorb from food and supplements.
- Pregnancy/Breastfeeding: Please speak to your GP if you're pregnant or breastfeeding before using PPIs.

Serious Lansoprazole side effects

This can include joint pain and a red skin rash, especially on parts of your body exposed to the sun, such as your arms, cheeks, and nose.
What is the difference between Lansoprazole and over-the-counter PPIs?
Lansoprazole capsules contain the PPI (proton pump inhibitor) active ingredient. There are some over-the-counter PPI medicines suitable for treating acid reflux symptoms and available without a prescription, but these contain a lower dose than prescription PPIs such as Lansoprazole.
Are PPIs safe?
Both Lansoprazole 15 mg and Lansoprazole 30 mg will often contain higher PPI doses than over-the-counter alternatives.
Long-term use can cause severe PPI side effects. Some of PPIs’ most serious side effects include: kidney disease, bacterial infections and bone fractures.
You should only use this medication long-term if advised to do so by a healthcare professional.
How do you take Lansoprazole?
Take Lansoprazole capsules or orodispersible tablets on an empty stomach, about 30 minutes to one hour before eating breakfast.
How long can you safely take Lansoprazole capsules?
How long you take Lansoprazole depends on the condition being treated, and your prescriber will set the length of your course. Duodenal ulcers are usually treated for 2 to 4 weeks, and stomach ulcers and reflux that has damaged the gullet (oesophagitis) for 4 to 8 weeks. Some people take a lower dose of 15mg a day long term, to stop oesophagitis coming back or to protect the stomach while taking NSAID painkillers. If your reflux symptoms have not settled within 4 weeks, see your doctor.
You should only ever take alternative Lansoprazole courses if advised by your doctor.
