Prescription Range

Lymecycline capsules are an oral antibiotic that is used to treat moderate acne. It is designed to be taken once daily. It works by killing the acne-causing bacteria that live on the skin, reducing their numbers by preventing them from making the proteins they need to reproduce. Reducing the number of bacteria that cause acne outbreaks reduces skin inflammation and gives the skin time to heal.

Lymecycline capsules treat acne by killing the bacteria that cause acne on the skin's surface. These bacteria feed on sebum produced by the sebaceous glands; however, their waste products irritate the glands, leading to infection and inflammation of the skin.

If you suffer from acne, but other acne treatments, including topical treatments, haven't worked, book an online consultation at Pharmacy Online and speak with one of our UK-registered doctors about taking lymecycline capsules.

When to Use Lymecycline?

Lymecycline is often used to treat inflammatory acne that doesn't respond to traditional topical treatments.

It reduces the bacteria that cause acne, and your GP or a registered pharmacist will usually prescribe it along with another topical treatment.

However, Lymecycline may also be used to treat other infections, including:

  • Sexually transmitted infections
  • Chest and sinus infections
  • Infections around or in the mouth

Lymecycline Age Restrictions

Lymecycline is suitable for adults and children aged 12 years or older. It's not usually prescribed for younger children because they rarely suffer from severe acne. A GP will usually opt for different antibiotics when treating children with bacterial infections.

How to Use Lymecycline Generic Capsules?

Please follow these instructions when using Lymecycline capsules for acne:

  • In most cases, you'll take 408mg once daily, with most pharmacists and GPs advising that you take it in the morning.
  • Avoid chewing or breaking the capsule; swallow it whole with water. Please avoid lying down for at least half an hour after taking Lymecycline to prevent damage to your oesophagus.
  • Even if your acne begins to improve, you should still complete the full course of treatment, which is usually for 12 weeks. However, in cases of severe acne, your GP might prescribe it for a longer period.

When to Avoid Taking Lymecycline Acne Treatment?

As a tetracycline antibiotic, you may need to avoid Lymecycline in some cases. These include:

  • Allergies: If you're allergic or sensitive to Lymecycline or tetracyclines, you should avoid using it.
  • Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Lymecycline can damage your baby during pregnancy. You should also avoid it while breastfeeding, as tetracyclines can cause discolouration to developing teeth.
  • Retinoids: If you're taking retinoid medications like isotretinoin, you should avoid Lymecycline as it can increase the risks of intracranial hypertension.

Lymecycline Precautions

If any of the following apply, you should take precautions and seek medical advice before using Lymecycline:

  • Kidney & Liver Problems: Lylecycline can both impact your kidney and liver - especially if you have a pre-existing condition.
  • Systemic Lupus Erythematosus: As an inflammatory autoimmune disorder, lupus can worsen when Lymecycline is used.
  • Medications: If you're taking antacids or mineral supplements, please ensure you use them at least two hours before or after taking Lymecycline, as it can affect how much of the antibiotic you absorb.
  • UV Exposure: Lymecycline can cause photosensitivity, making your skin more sensitive to UV light. Always wear high SPF when out in the sunshine.
  • Oral Contraception: While there's little evidence to confirm that Lymecycline compromises your oral contraceptives, it's advisable to use extra precautions.

Ingredients of Lymecycline

Lymecycline - a tetracycline antibiotic - is the active ingredient, which reduces the bacteria that cause acne to grow.

Inactive ingredients include:

  • Colloidal Hydrated Silica
  • Various Colourants
  • Gelatin
  • Titanium Dioxide
  • Magnesium Stearate

Side Effects of Lymecycline

There are a few side effects associated with Lymecycline. The most common are gastrointestinal discomforts such as abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting, but these are normal and should subside over time.

In rare cases, Lymecycline can also cause fungal infections such as thrush and skin reactions.

If you experience a serious allergic reaction while taking lymecycline capsules, stop taking the capsules immediately and seek medical assistance.

You should stop taking Lymecycline tablets and inform a healthcare professional if you experience any of the following side effects:

  • Persistent sore throat
  • Double or blurred vision
  • Severe, persistent headache
  • Fever
  • Unexplained bruising
  • Yellowing of the skin or eyes

Do not take Lymecycline if you've ever had kidney disease or if you're pregnant. Breastfeeding women should consult their doctor before taking this medicine.

Don't take Lymecycline if you're taking other antibiotic acne treatments, as it can make your acne worse.

How long does Lymecycline take to work?

Lymecycline works slowly against acne. You should start to see some improvement within a week, but it may take several weeks for your acne to clear.

To reap the benefits of lymecycline capsules, finish the full course as prescribed by your doctor.

Will Lymecycline affect my contraception?

Lymecycline doesn’t stop the contraceptive pill from working, including the combined pill and emergency contraception.

But if Lymecycline gives you severe diarrhoea or vomiting, you should use other methods of protection, as oral contraceptives may not be as effective.

Speak to your doctor for more information.

Why have I got a skin rash?

Lymecycline capsules are a prescription-only medicine, and they can cause common side effects, including skin rash.

If you are worried about your skin rash, speak to your doctor.

What is the difference between acne and spots?

People get spots all the time, but it doesn't mean they're suffering from acne. Acne is a chronic skin condition that causes recurring breakouts on the face and other parts of the body. Spots are usually isolated and occasional, but acne usually requires treatment.

What are the four main acne triggers?
  1. Blocked Pores: When dead skin cells and oil clog pores, it can lead to acne.
  2. Bacteria: When bacteria are present in the pores, the risk of acne increases.
  3. Oil Production: Teenagers are more prone to acne due to increased sebum production.
  4. Hormones: Alterations in hormone levels can make people more susceptible to acne at different points in their lives.
When should acne be gone?

Most people experience acne during their teenage years, and the symptoms typically subside in the mid-20s. However, it's not uncommon for adults to experience frequent breakouts. If your acne persists into your mid to late 20s, your doctor will discuss treatment options with you.

If you take Lymecycline as instructed, you should notice the symptoms begin to improve within a few weeks.

How do I know if my acne is hormonal?

Hormonal acne is common in teenage males and women. If your spots mainly appear around the jawline and chin, it could be a hormonal issue. Women often notice that their acne worsens around their menstrual cycles.

Can you get a facial while on Lymecycline?

There's nothing to say you can't get a facial while taking lymecycline capsules, but it's vital to inform the dermatologist or aesthetic clinic beforehand. Harsh chemicals aren't a good idea, as they can damage your skin, but gentle treatments for sensitive skin should be fine.

What are the signs that your acne is healing?

Acne can take time to clear, but you'll notice initial signs of healing, including:

  • Less inflammation and redness
  • Less painful spots
  • Smaller breakouts
  • Better skin texture
Does acne return after Lymecycline?

Acne can return after you finish the treatment, but some people notice long-term symptom relief after one course of treatment. You might need a few treatment cycles if your acne responds slowly to lymecycline capsules.

Does Lymecycline cause weight gain?

There's no conclusive proof that you'll gain weight whilst taking Lymecycline. Reports are incredibly rare, making the acne treatment ideal if you're on a diet.

When will I see the benefits of Lymecycline?

It depends on how well your acne responds to Lymecycline 408mg capsules. Some people notice positive changes after just one week, while others take longer. It can take weeks or even months for the acne to completely clear.

What are the best alternative acne treatments?

It depends on your symptoms. Some people find relief with topical treatments, while others need oral antibiotics. Other options include doxycycline, the combined oral contraceptive pill, and - for severe cases of acne - Isotretinoin.
