Macrobid (Nitrofurantoin MR)
Nitrofurantoin is an antibiotic to treat urinary tract infections (UTIs), specifically cystitis. Nitrofurantoin damages the DNA of bacteria cells, stopping them from reproducing or renewing, helping your immune system fight the urinary tract infection more effectively. It's suitable for most adults, including during pregnancy, but should not be used during labour or delivery. If you are breastfeeding, check with your doctor first. Contains Nitrofurantoin.
- Antibiotics for the treatment of UTIs
- Simple twice-daily dose
- The branded version of Nitrofurantoin
Macrobid MR is a modified-release preparation of nitrofurantoin, an effective antibiotic that targets bacterial infections. It is typically used to treat urinary tract infections (UTIs), such as cystitis. Macrobid capsules should help to relieve any UTI symptoms within a few days.
Macrobid works by being absorbed from your blood and into your urine. Its antibiotic properties then pass through the site of the Urinary Tract Infection (UTI), allowing Macrobid to directly target the site of infection. This means that Macrobid will not work for any other kinds of infection.
Macrobid antibiotics are not suitable for the treatment of pyelonephritis (kidney infections) or other deep tissue infections.
Do not take Macrobid if you:
- are allergic to nitrofurantoin, other nitrofurans or any of the other ingredients
- have kidney disease that severely affects how your kidneys work (eGFR below 45 ml/min)
- have G6PD (glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase) deficiency
- have porphyria (a blood disorder)
- are in the final stages of pregnancy (labour or delivery)
- are breastfeeding a baby with known or suspected G6PD deficiency
Macrobid is not suitable for babies under 3 months old. Tell us if you have lung, liver or nerve problems, anaemia, diabetes or a vitamin B deficiency before taking Macrobid.

How can I manage the side effects of Nitrofurantoin capsules?
A common side effect of taking Macrobid can be an upset stomach. Side effects like diarrhoea can be reduced by using over-the-counter treatments such as Loperamide. Nausea can be prevented by taking this medication with or just after food. There are options available for vomiting, such as cyclizine, promethazine, and prochlorperazine, which can be purchased here at Pharmacy Online.
Can I drink alcohol with Nitrofurantoin capsules?
There is no known interaction between alcohol and Macrobid. However, Macrobid can cause dizziness, drowsiness and stomach upset, so avoid alcohol if it makes these worse.
Does Macrobid cause thrush?
Taking Macrobid may cause thrush, as antibiotics can disturb the normal bacteria that keep yeast in check, meaning that there is a risk of developing thrush when taking Macrobid.
Pharmacy Online prescribes a wide range of suitable thrush treatments to treat symptoms. Our online doctor can help advise the best treatment for you.
Can I use Macrobid if I’m pregnant?
Macrobid may be used in pregnancy, but it should not be used during labour or delivery (the final stages of pregnancy) as it might affect the baby. If you are breastfeeding, speak to your doctor first. Do not take Macrobid if you are breastfeeding a baby with known or suspected G6PD deficiency (an enzyme deficiency).
