What causes a cold or the flu?

Viruses, like colds and flu, are triggered by an infectious illness. A virus circulates in the air, via an infected person who sneezes or coughs. While colder weather doesn't necessarily lead to an illness, it can increase the likelihood of catching a virus. Viruses can also spread via surfaces that have been touched by an infected individual. The flu and colds are similar, however, the flu is more extreme than the common cold.
