Ovestin (Estriol) 0.1% Cream 15g

Ovestin 1mg cream is a hormone replacement therapy (HRT) option used during menopause to relieve vaginal dryness (vaginal atrophy). Unlike other HRT treatments, you apply Ovestin Cream high up inside the vagina using a reusable applicator. After application, the cream emulates oestrogen levels that the ovaries typically produce to ensure the vagina stays comfortable and moist. It's for postmenopausal women and contains the active ingredient estriol (an oestrogen hormone).

  • Used to treat vaginal dryness
  • Hormone replacement therapy (HRT)
  • Easy to apply
  • For female use only

Ovestin 1mg cream is a hormone-based treatment for women going through menopause. The shortage of oestrogens during menopause may cause the vaginal wall and its lining to become dry and thin. This can lead to pain during intercourse and an increase in itching/irritation, which can cause infections. By replacing estrogen via the vaginal cream Ovestin, the patient can see a reduction in symptoms and maintain balance during menopause.

When to Use Ovestin Cream?

Ovestin Cream (also known as 0.1% Estriol Cream) is a localised HRT treatment suitable for postmenopausal women. It can relieve symptoms caused by a drop in estrogen levels and is best used in the following situations:

  • Vaginal Symptoms: Menopause can cause a range of vaginal symptoms, including itching, irritation, urinary infections, the urge to urinate frequently, and painful intercourse. Ovestin cream can relieve your symptoms.
  • Wound Healing: In some cases, Ovestin cream may also be used to promote faster healing after vaginal surgery. You'll typically use it before and after the surgery.

Ovestin Age Restrictions

Ovestin 1mg cream is only suitable for postmenopausal women who haven't had a period in at least 12 months. If you're currently going through menopausal symptoms, you should seek medical advice and choose another treatment.

How to Use Ovestin Cream?

If you haven't used HRT before or are switching from an HRT that doesn't cause menstrual bleeding, you can start using Ovestin cream immediately.

However, if you're switching from a continuous combined HRT, you can start it on any day. If you're switching from a cyclical HRT, start it one week after your cycle ends.

The usual dose is 1 applicator filled up to the ring (0.5g of cream) a day for the first 2 to 3 weeks (no more than 4 weeks), then 1 applicator twice a week. Your doctor will prescribe the lowest dose that relieves your symptoms. Before vaginal surgery, the dose is 1 applicator a day for 2 weeks. After surgery, do not use the cream for at least 2 weeks, then use 1 applicator twice a week.

How to Use It?

  • Open the Tube and use the pointed end to pierce the seal.
  • Screw the plastic applicator onto the tube.
  • Squeeze the tube until the cream reaches the red ring mark on the applicator (0.5 g).
  • Lie down and apply the cream by inserting the applicator into your vagina and pressing until the cream is released.
  • Remove the applicator and wash it thoroughly.

Who Should Avoid Using Ovestin?

Ovestin Cream is a great way to relieve menopause symptoms but isn't suitable for everyone. If any of the following apply, you should avoid using it:

  • History of Cancer: If you have a history of breast cancer or other estrogen-sensitive cancers, you should avoid using the cream and seek alternative treatments.
  • Vaginal Bleeding: The cream is only suitable for women who haven't had a bleed in 12 months. If you're dealing with unexpected bleeding, please see a doctor.
  • Endometrial Hyperplasia: You'll need to seek treatment for endometrial hyperplasia before using Ovestin cream if you have any of the symptoms.
  • Blood Clots: Ovestin isn't suitable for people who have or have ever had a blood clot in a vein, or who have a blood clotting disorder (such as protein C, protein S or antithrombin deficiency).
  • Heart Attack, Stroke or Angina: Do not use Ovestin if you have or have recently had a disease caused by blood clots in the arteries, such as a heart attack, stroke or angina.
  • Liver Disease: Do not use Ovestin if you have or have ever had liver disease and your liver function tests have not returned to normal.
  • Porphyria: Do not use Ovestin if you have porphyria, a rare blood disorder passed down in families.
  • Allergies: If you're allergic or sensitive to any of the ingredients in Ovestin cream, you should avoid using it.

Ovestin Precautions

Other conditions that could rule you out of using the cream include high blood pressure, uterine fibroids, diabetes, gallstones, migraines, and lupus.

Please seek advice from a medical professional to determine whether the benefits of using Ovestin cream outweigh the potential dangers.

Why would I choose Ovestin 1mg cream such as Ovestin over oral tablets for vaginal dryness?

Ovestin 1mg cream treats vaginal dryness at the source, making it more effective for localised symptoms than oral tablets. When you take oral medication, it circulates estrogen through the body, but Ovestin cream results in fewer side effects and alleviates discomfort.

How long does Ovestin cream take to work for vaginal dryness?

Ovestin doesn’t work instantly—and it takes a few days to weeks to see improvements. Even if you don't notice relief instantly, it's essential to continue using the cream, as you will begin to notice relief.

Can I buy Ovestin cream online?

PharmacyOnline.co.uk can prescribe Ovestin following a consultation with one of our UK-registered doctors. The consultation forms can be completed in your own time and will be reviewed by one of our GPs.

What is the Ovestin hormone replacement therapy cream?

Ovestin cream is a hormone replacement therapy (HRT) treatment that contains estriol. The natural form of estrogen is known to relieve menopausal symptoms, and it provides localised support when applied directly to the vagina.

Estrogen production decreases during menopause, leading to vaginal dryness, itching, and sensitivity. When you apply the cream regularly, you can manage the symptoms and potentially avoid using high-dose systematic treatments.

Is Ovestin cream safe to use long-term?

Ovestin cream can be used long-term if a healthcare professional recommends it. Your doctor will prescribe the lowest dose that relieves your symptoms, and you should see them for regular check-ups (at least once a year) to discuss whether you still need it and whether the benefits still outweigh the risks.

Can I have sex while using Ovestin cream?

Yes, you can. However, applying the cream at bedtime is best to ensure complete absorption and avoid any mess. Your doctor or pharmacist can provide advice as to whether you can have sexual intercourse and how to use the cream.
