Premique Low Dose is continuous combined HRT. Each tablet contains conjugated oestrogens and medroxyprogesterone acetate (a progestogen), and you take one tablet every day without a break.
When to Use Premique?
Premique is a type of Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) that reduces the symptoms of oestrogen deficiency in women with an intact uterus.
It's typically used in the following situations:
- Relieving Menopausal Symptoms: Menopause can cause a range of uncomfortable symptoms, including hot flushes, sleep disturbances, night sweats and vaginal dryness.
- Period-Free HRT: Premique Low Dose, a combined treatment, can stop monthly bleeds. However, some HRT treatments do initiate monthly bleeds.
Age Restrictions
There's no fixed upper age limit for using Premique, although women who start menopause after 60 should speak to a healthcare professional before using it. Premique is only for postmenopausal women who still have a womb (uterus).
How to Use Premique HRT Treatment?
When using Premique, please take one tablet daily and start a new pack immediately after you run out. You shouldn't have a tablet-free break.
While not essential, taking Premique at the same time each day ensures you don't forget it.
Please swallow the tablet whole and take it with some water (you can take it with or without food). If you're switching to Premique from sequential HRT (with a monthly bleed), start Premique the day after you finish your previous pack.
When to Avoid Using Premique?
Premique is generally a safe treatment, but there are some circumstances when you should avoid it. These include:
- Previous Medical Conditions: You shouldn't use the HRT treatment if you have a history of breast cancer or oestrogen-dependent tumours.
- Vaginal Bleeding: Do not take Premique if you have unexplained vaginal bleeding that has not been checked by a doctor, as you could have an underlying condition.
- Current Medical Conditions: Do not take Premique if you have untreated endometrial hyperplasia (thickening of the womb lining), have or have had a blood clot in a vein (such as DVT or a pulmonary embolism), have a blood clotting disorder (thrombophilia), have or have recently had a blood clot in an artery (such as angina or a heart attack), have liver disease or liver tests that have not returned to normal, or have porphyria.
- Allergies or Sensitivities: If you're allergic or sensitive to medroxyprogesterone, conjugated oestrogens, or other ingredients, please avoid using Premique.
Precautions
Premique is an HRT treatment, and it isn't suitable for pregnant or breastfeeding women. If you have symptoms of a medical condition but don't yet have a diagnosis, please speak to a doctor before using Premique.
Ingredients
Premique's active ingredients are:
- Conjugated Oestrogens (Estrogens): A mixture of oestrogens from natural sources. They mimic the oestrogen your body creates to reduce your symptoms.

Inactive Ingredients Include:
- Lactose monohydrate
- Sucrose
- Carnauba wax
- Microcrystalline cellulose
- Magnesium stearate
- Macrogol 400 (polyethylene glycol)
- Hypromellose

What are the risks involved in using Premique low-dose tablets?
Every medication can come with risks, and Premique low-dose tablets are no exception. Some risks can occur when using HRT that should be considered before you start treatment. Concerns about certain risks should be discussed in your consultation or with your doctor, who will be able to advise. Although risks are uncommon, monitoring and minimising risks during HRT treatment is important, as is attending regular checkups with your doctor.
Can I buy Premique over the counter?
No, you'll need a prescription to order Premique. However, our pharmacists can issue a prescription after performing a complete assessment.
What if I miss a dose?
If you forget a tablet, take it as soon as you remember, then carry on as before. If you have forgotten more than one tablet, take only the most recent one. Do not take a double dose to make up for missed tablets. Missed tablets may cause some breakthrough bleeding or spotting.
How long does Premique take to work?
Most people notice their symptoms begin to improve within a few weeks, but some people may take up to three months.
Can I take other medications with Premique?
Certain medications, including herbal supplements, antibiotics, and anti-epileptic treatments, may interfere with Premique. Please let your doctor or pharmacist know what you're taking to avoid interactions.
Is it safe to take Premique long-term?
You should take HRT at the lowest feasible dose for the shortest time it takes to reduce your symptoms. Your doctor will schedule annual reviews to check that the medicine is still suitable for you.
