Priligy
Priligy is a medicine used to treat premature ejaculation in men (when ejaculation occurs sooner than they would like during sexual intercourse). It can help you last longer before you ejaculate, and give you more control over when it happens. It's suitable for men between 18 and 64 experiencing premature ejaculation and contains the active ingredient dapoxetine.
- Effective premature ejaculation treatment
- Contains dapoxetine
- To be taken 1-3 hours before sexual activity
Priligy is the brand name of the drug dapoxetine, a short-acting drug used in the treatment of premature ejaculation. It is for men aged 18 to 64 who have been diagnosed with premature ejaculation.
Priligy is only prescribed if all of these are true: you ejaculate within about 2 minutes of penetration, with little stimulation and before you want to; you have little control over it; it causes you real distress or problems in your relationship; and it has happened most times you have had sex over the past 6 months.
Do not take Priligy if:
- You are allergic to dapoxetine or any of the other ingredients
- You have heart problems such as heart failure, heart rhythm or conduction problems (such as heart block or sick sinus syndrome), significant coronary heart disease or significant heart valve disease
- You have ever fainted
- You have ever had mania or severe depression
- You have moderate or severe liver problems
- You take, or have taken in the last 14 days, an MAOI, thioridazine, an SSRI, SNRI or tricyclic antidepressant, lithium, linezolid, tramadol, a triptan, L-tryptophan or St John's wort
- You take certain medicines that strongly affect how Priligy is broken down, such as ketoconazole, itraconazole, ritonavir, saquinavir, nelfinavir, atazanavir, telithromycin or nefazodone
How to take Priligy:
- Start with 30 mg. If that is not enough, and you have had no bad side effects or signs of fainting, your prescriber may raise it to 60 mg. Side effects are more likely, and can be worse, at 60 mg.
- Take one tablet 1 to 3 hours before you expect to have sex. Never take more than one tablet in 24 hours.
- Swallow it whole with at least one full glass of water.
- After your first 4 weeks, or after 6 doses, talk to your prescriber about whether to carry on.
Priligy contains lactose (45.88 mg in each 30 mg tablet and 91.75 mg in each 60 mg tablet). If a doctor has told you that you cannot digest some sugars, talk to our prescriber before taking it.
There is always a risk of side effects with all medications. Some of these can be quite mild and can subside over time. Others are more serious and should be reported to your GP right away if you experience any side effects. Please contact a member of our team if you are concerned about any potential side effects that may occur when taking Priligy.
Very common side effects (may affect more than 1 in 10 people) include:
- Nausea
- Headache
- Dizziness
Common side effects include:
- Tremor
- Vomiting
- Diarrhoea
- Anxiety
- Constipation
- Sleep disturbance
Stop taking Priligy and see your doctor straight away if you have fits (seizures), faint or feel light-headed when you stand up, notice any changes in your mood, or have any thoughts of suicide or self-harm.
Priligy can cause fainting and a drop in blood pressure when you stand up. Before you start treatment, your prescriber will check your blood pressure and pulse lying down and standing up. If you feel light-headed, lie down or sit with your head between your knees until it passes, and do not stand up quickly after lying or sitting.
How does Priligy work?
Priligy contains the active drug dapoxetine which belongs to a class of drugs called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (also known as SSRIs). SSRIs work by increasing the level of serotonin in the nervous system. Although it is not known precisely why increasing the levels of serotonin in the nervous system improves the time it takes to ejaculate.
Is it safe to use Priligy dapoxetine continuously?
Priligy dapoxetine should not be taken on a continual daily basis without sexual activity and should only be taken before sexual activity as directed. A maximum of one Priligy tablet is to be taken in 24 hours.
How long will it take for Priligy dapoxetine to work?
The maximum effects of Priligy dapoxetine occur one to two hours after taking the tablet.
Can I take Priligy and drink alcohol?
Taking Priligy after drinking alcohol can increase feelings of dizziness, drowsiness and slow reactions.
Priligy can also cause you to faint by temporarily lowering your blood pressure; therefore, it is not recommended to take Priligy and drink alcohol together.
Can I take Priligy with other medicines?
Tell our prescriber about every medicine you take.
- Do not take Priligy if you have erectile dysfunction and take erectile dysfunction tablets (PDE5 inhibitors) such as sildenafil, tadalafil or vardenafil.
- Tell our prescriber if you take alpha blockers (such as tamsulosin) or nitrates, as these can make you more likely to feel dizzy or faint when you stand up.
- If you take certain medicines such as erythromycin, clarithromycin, fluconazole, amprenavir, fosamprenavir, aprepitant, verapamil or diltiazem, the maximum dose of Priligy is 30 mg.
- Do not drink grapefruit juice in the 24 hours before taking Priligy.
Leaflets
Before you buy Priligy online or other medicines, regardless of whether they are over-the-counter or prescription-only, it is essential always to read the patient information leaflet.
