Propecia

Propecia is a medicine designed to treat male pattern baldness. Many men suffer from unexpected male pattern baldness, where head hair stops growing and creates unwanted bald patches on the head. Propecia Finasteride prevents the hormone DHT from being created within the body allowing hair follicles to grow normally and restoring natural hair growth. It's suitable for adults over 18 years and contains the active ingredient Finasteride.

  • Designed for male pattern baldness
  • A simple one-a-day dose in tablet form
  • The branded version of cheaper generic Finasteride
  • Can be used with Regaine

Propecia, a brand name of Finasteride, blocks the enzyme (5-alpha reductase) that turns testosterone into DHT, the hormone that shrinks hair follicles. This reduces hair loss.

There is always a risk of side effects with all medications and hair loss treatments. Some of these can be quite mild and can subside over time. Others are more serious and should be reported to your GP right away if you experience any side effects. Please contact a member of our team if you are concerned about any potential side effects that may occur when taking hair loss treatments such as Propecia.

Uncommon side effects (may affect up to 1 in 100 people) include:

  • Being unable to have an erection, or problems with ejaculation (such as less semen)
  • Less desire to have sex

Side effects where the frequency is not known include:

  • Breast swelling or tenderness

Some men can experience depression when taking Propecia for hair loss. If this occurs when taking Propecia, you need to contact your doctor and stop taking this medication straight away. Contact your GP immediately if you experience any symptoms of depression or suicidal thoughts.

Problems with erections, sex drive and ejaculation have continued in some men after they stopped taking Propecia. If you get any sexual side effects, talk to your doctor.

Tell your doctor promptly about any changes in your breast tissue, such as lumps, pain, enlargement or nipple discharge, as these may be signs of a serious condition such as breast cancer.

Propecia is for men only and must not be taken by women or children. Women who are pregnant or planning to become pregnant must not touch crushed or broken tablets, as the medicine may affect the baby's sex organs.

A patient card reminding you of these warnings comes in the pack.

Does Propecia work for hair growth in older men too?

Although Propecia has shown to be most effective in younger men, it can still be beneficial for men of any age to aid in preventing more hair loss.

Is Propecia a permanent hair loss treatment?

For people that have taken Propecia 1mg daily, it has shown to be effective for male pattern hair loss and works for 15 years or more and typically works for the full duration of the course of treatment. It is possible that Propecia may lose some of its effectiveness over time.

Does Propecia cause infertility when taken for male pattern hair loss?

The majority of men taking Propecia do not experience any problems when trying to conceive.

Can I stop taking Propecia for hair growth?

If you stop taking Propecia, you are likely to lose the hair you have gained within 9 to 12 months. It is important to keep taking it for as long as your prescriber advises.
