When to Use Ventolin Evohaler?

Ventolin Evohalers are known as reliever inhalers, as they can quickly treat breathing problems by opening the airways. You should use the blue inhaler when:

  • You’re Experiencing Symptoms: If you experience wheezing, coughing, chest tightness, and shortness of breath, you should use the inhaler.
  • Prevention: While Ventolin Evohalers are reliever treatments, you can use them before engaging in activities that might trigger your symptoms.
  • Asthma Attacks: If you’re experiencing an asthma attack, you can take more puffs than the usual dose, but it’s important to follow your doctor or healthcare provider’s instructions.

Ventolin Evohaler Age Restrictions

Ventolin Inhalers are suitable for adults and children aged four and over. However, different dosages apply depending on the age group. While children under four can use the inhaler, it's usually with a face mask, which ensures safe delivery of the medication.

How to Use Ventolin Evohaler?

Always read the instructions on your reliever inhaler, as it will provide you with precise instructions on how to use it, including the number of puffs of Ventolin to take.

As a general rule, when using reliever inhalers, there are a few steps to follow:

  1. Stand or sit comfortably
  2. Remove the cover from the blue Ventolin inhaler by gently pulling it off
  3. Shake the inhaler
  4. Hold the inhaler upright, placing your thumb underneath the mouthpiece
  5. Exhale
  6. Position the mouthpiece between your teeth and close your lips around it
  7. Inhale through your mouth and press the top of the canister as you breathe deeply
  8. Hold your breath
  9. Remove the inhaler from your mouth and replace the mouth cover

If you need to take another inhale, wait for one to two minutes before repeating the above steps.

Each inhaler contains approximately 200 puffs.

Ventolin Evohaler Dosage Instructions:

  • Adults and Adolescents: Take one to two puffs when experiencing asthma symptoms or two puffs 15 minutes before activity.
  • Children Aged 4 to 11: Take one puff when experiencing asthma symptoms or a puff before exercise or other attack-inducing activities.
  • Children Under 4: Your healthcare professional will recommend a dosage based on the child’s needs.

When to Avoid Using the Ventolin Evohaler?

Ventolin Evohalers can provide vital support when you’re experiencing asthma symptoms, but there are some cases where you should avoid them. These include:

  • Allergies: If you’re allergic to salbutamol sulfate or any other ingredient in the inhaler, you should avoid using it, as a reaction may occur.
  • Worsening Symptoms: While rare, some people experience a condition called paradoxical bronchospasm after using the inhaler, which is a worsening of breathing. You should stop treatment immediately if you experience this side effect.
  • Pregnancy Issues: If you have a history of issues during pregnancy or your healthcare professional advises caution, you should avoid using the inhaler.

Precautions

If you have medical conditions such as high blood pressure, thyroid issues, diabetes, or heart problems, Ventolin may be unsuitable. Please speak to your doctor before using it. The same goes if you’re taking other medications, including steroids, diuretics, and beta blockers.

Ventolin Evohaler Ingredients

Ventolin Evohalers contain just two ingredients:

  • Salbutamol Sulfate: The active ingredient of Salbutamol works by opening up the airways. It’s a selective beta-2 adrenoceptor agonist that improves your breathing.
  • Excipient (Propellant): The inhaler also contains HFA 134a, which turns the Salbutamol into a fine mist. Ventolin Evohalers don’t use chlorofluorocarbons, which are more environmentally friendly.

What is a Ventolin Evohaler?

Ventolin Evohaler is the brand name for the salbutamol inhaler. It's also known as the blue reliever inhaler.

The Ventolin inhaler is produced by GSK pharmaceuticals and comes packaged in a distinctive blue and white box.

Salbutamol works by widening the lung’s vessels, enabling a better oxygen supply and making it easier for asthma sufferers to breathe.

Ventolin is the branded version of Salbutamol, containing the exact same strength and formulation.

What's the difference between salbutamol inhalers and ventolin inhalers?

Salbutamol is the active ingredient in Ventolin inhalers, and is used to treat asthma.

It belongs to a group of medicines known as fast acting bronchodilators. Bronchodilators work quickly to keep airways open and reduce coughing, wheezing, breathlessness and chest tightness.

The active component in Salbutamol inhalers is the same as that in Ventolin inhalers. While Salbutamol inhalers are packaged up in many different brands, including Ventolin, they all function the same way.

Another brand name that uses Salbutamol is Salamol. These inhalers are considerably cheaper than Ventolin Evohalers, however patients don't rate their effectiveness as highly.

How long does Ventolin Evohaler take to relieve asthma symptoms?

When you take a puff of your Ventolin inhaler, it takes effect almost immediately, making your breathing easier.

The Ventolin Evohaler continues to work for about three to five hours after use.

How long will I need to use my Ventolin inhaler?

Most people will use a Ventolin Evohaler inhaler for many years.

Bear in mind that Ventolin inhalers are not designed to prevent asthma symptoms; they are designed to relieve tightness in the chest and other asthma symptoms as they occur.

You should always have your Ventolin inhaler with you so you can use it as soon as you have breathing problems.

Do not stop taking Ventolin unless your doctor tells you to. If you stop taking your Ventolin inhaler, your breathing problems could get worse.

Is it safe to use a Ventolin inhaler for a long time?

Ventolin Evohaler is a very safe medicine. There’s no evidence that it does any lasting damage to your body, even if you use it for many years.

Can I drink alcohol with a Ventolin asthma inhaler?

How should I store my Ventolin inhaler?

Please store the Ventolin Evohaler below 30°C, away from heat sources, direct sunlight, children, and pets. It’s essential to avoid burning or puncturing the inhaler.

How do I know if my Ventolin inhaler is empty?

Many inhalers come with dose counters, which will indicate when they’re nearing the end of their lifespan. However, if the inhaler doesn’t come with a counter, you’ll notice it’s nearing empty when it stops releasing as much medication.
