Utovlan period delay tablets are used to delay the onset of periods by up to 17 days. Utovlan contains the active drug, norethisterone, which acts as an artificial version of the naturally occurring progesterone hormone.
Utovlan 5mg is taken three times daily, in the morning, midday and evening. You should begin Utovlan treatment starting three days prior to your period.
Utovlan is not a form of contraception, so precautions are still necessary. It is safe to use alongside the mini-pill, but is not safe to use alongside a combined contraceptive pill.
How effective are Utovlan period delay tablets?
Utovlan is a very effective period delay treatment. It is most effective when it is taken consistently, with doses taken three times daily at the same times each day. Utovlan is not effective if it is taken after the period has started.
How long should I take Utovlan for?
The course of Utovlan is taken over a maximum of 17 consecutive days to effectively delay your period. A course of Utovlan should not be taken more than once in four months.
Can you take Utovlan and drink alcohol?
It is fine to take Utovlan and drink alcohol. There are no adverse interactions reported, meaning it is safe to consume alcohol when taking this medication.
Can Utovlan be used as a contraceptive?
Utovlan 5mg is not an effective contraceptive treatment. Utovlan will delay periods, but does not offer a solution for preventing pregnancy. You should continue to use other methods of contraception to prevent pregnancy when taking Utovlan. However, it is not safe to use Utovlan alongside a combined contraceptive pill.
How quickly does Utovlan work?
Since Utovlan delays periods using the artificial hormone norethisterone, it requires some time to become active in your system. Utovlan’s hormonal effects work best when the course of treatment begins three days prior to the onset of your period. It will not delay your period if it is taken after your bleeding has started.
