What is a Migraine?

A migraine is the name given to a type of headache. Migraines are very common amongst many adults - affecting 1 in every 5 women and around 1 in every 15 men. A migraine is usually described as a throbbing pain on one side of the head. Some people also experience nausea, being sick and heightened light or noise sensitivity when suffering from migraines.

Different types of migraines

There are a variety of different types of migraines. These can be distinguished by specific names and terms;

Migraine with aura - you are experiencing typical warning signs before the migraine takes effect. These signs can include seeing flashing lights, zig-zag patterns or experiencing tingling sensations like pins and needles.

A silent migraine, known also as a migraine aura without headache - you experience other typical migraine symptoms, without developing a headache.

Migraine without aura - this is where a migraine develops without any warning signs. This is the most common type of migraine.

Migraines can occur frequently, sometimes happening several times a week. However, some people will only experience migraines every so often.

What causes migraines?

There is no determined or specific cause of migraines. However, they are thought to be caused by temporary changes in the chemicals, nerves and blood vessels located in the brain.

People who regularly suffer from migraines can find that they are triggered by other factors, such as starting a period, stress, tiredness or specific foods and drinks.

How can I treat a migraine?

Unfortunately, there is no known cure for migraines. However, there are several different ways that you can calm certain symptoms.

  • Triptans are medications that can help to reverse any changes to the brain that can cause migraines.
  • Typical painkillers such as paracetamol or ibuprofen can help to dull the discomfort, but it is advised that you don’t exceed the recommended dose as this can be detrimental to your health.
  • Anti-emetics are a good option for people who feel nauseous or suffer from feeling sick during a migraine episode.

Can you prevent migraines?

If you regularly suffer from migraines, it’s best to try and prevent getting them all together. You may have a suspected trigger food or drink which you should try to avoid. Ensuring you’re living a generally healthy lifestyle can also help to prevent regular migraines. Taking frequent exercise, eating and sleeping well can all prevent recurring attacks.

It’s also important to keep hydrated and drink plenty of water, whilst cutting down on caffeinated drinks.

Should you suffer regularly from migraines and have explored other treatments and preventions, then you should discuss these issues with your doctor. You may be prescribed medication to help prevent further migraines.
