A tickly, dry cough is a cough that doesn't produce phlegm (mucus). When your airways are inflamed, this causes that tickly sensation that makes you want to cough. You'll usually feel better in a few weeks. The majority of dry coughs are caused by the following:

• Lower respiratory tract infections such as pneumonia and bronchitis.
• Upper respiratory tract infections, like laryngitis, whooping cough, colds, flu, and sinusitis.
• Hay fever and other allergies.
• Breathing in smoke or dust particles.
• Chronic illnesses, like bronchitis and asthma.

Numark Pholcodine Linctus BP contains the active ingredient pholcodine which inhibits the impulse to cough by blocking the cough reflex and diminishing the transmission of nerve signals associated with coughing. In doing so, it helps soothe and calm coughing, offering short-term relief so you experience comfort. 

Each 5ml dose includes pholcodine B.P. It also contains sorbitol (E420) and sunset yellow (E110). Other ingredients include citric acid monohydrate, saccharin sodium, propylene glycol, sodium benzoate (E211), carboxymethylcellulose, and purified water. Since this medicine contains pholcodine, it's best to give a reduced dose to elderly patients.

You can't take Numark Pholcodine Linctus BP at the same time as other medications, as there's a chance they may interact:

• Antidepressants such as Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (MAOIs).
• CNS depressants.
• Methadone.
• Hydroxyzine.
• Levallorphan.
• Hypnotics and sedatives such as sleeping tablets.
• Mexiletine.
• Metoclopramide.
• Neuromuscular blocking agents such as atracurium.

Always speak to your doctor or pharmacist before using this medicine if you're currently taking medication to guarantee you can take both drugs together.
