Understanding infant reflux
If your baby often sicks up after feeds or seems unusually fussy, it might be more than just usual baby troubles—it could be reflux, or gastroesophageal reflux (GER), a common issue in newborn babies and infants.
Why does reflux happen?
The main reason reflux occurs in babies is that their digestive systems are still developing. The muscle at the entrance of their stomach that keeps stomach contents from returning back up the oesophagus isn't fully mature, which means it’s quite common for some of their meal to be regurgitated and slip back up the baby's food pipe.
This doesn’t mean they’re unwell, or that they have a lactose intolerance or cow's milk protein allergy; it’s just a sign their little bodies are still developing.
Most infants grow out of reflux by their first birthday, as their digestive systems mature.
What do reflux symptoms look like?
Here are a few signs that might indicate your baby is experiencing reflux:
- Frequent sicking up, especially right after feeding.
- Noticeable discomfort during and after feeds, which might make feeding times stressful for you both.
- Difficulty swallowing or seeming to struggle or refuse to eat even when they appear hungry.
- Crying more than usual after meals, which could suggest they're feeling a bit sore.
- Poor weight gain, as they might not be keeping enough food down.
Silent reflux symptoms
Unfortunately, not all babies with reflux bring up milk or are sick. If your baby is displaying all the signs of reflux, it could be silent reflux. This can be tricky to spot because it doesn't come with the obvious signs we usually look for, like being sick.
So here's a few things to keep an eye out for:
- Persistent cough or wheezing can be a sign that their throat is irritated from stomach acids backing up.
- If your baby's cries have changed or become hoarser, it might be because their throat is sore.
- Feeding struggles such as arching their back, crying, or pulling away from the bottle or breast even though they're hungry.
- Excessive crying, as in more crying than usual can be a distress signal, especially after meals, or when lying down.
- Not gaining weight because they aren't eating enough.
It's natural to feel concerned, but remember, managing and treating reflux effectively can help alleviate reflux symptoms quickly. Most babies improve as they grow and their digestive system matures.
In the meantime, you can buy reflux medication, quickly and easily, from Pharmacy Online, and have it delivered directly to your door.
What is gastro oesophageal reflux disease?
Gastro oesophageal reflux disease (GERD), also known as chronic heartburn or acid reflux, is a condition that affects people of all ages. But when it affects your baby, it can be a bit more concerning and confusing.
GERD is essentially a more severe form of reflux. It’s characterised not just by the regurgitation of stomach contents but by the problems this causes, like discomfort, pain, and other potential complications.
One important thing to note is that gastroesophageal reflux (GER) and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) are related conditions but they're not the same, and one doesn’t necessarily lead to the other.
While it's true that all cases of GERD involve reflux, not all reflux escalates to the disease state of GERD. Many infants experience some degree of GER but do not develop GERD. The transition from GER to GERD usually only occurs if your baby regularly experiences reflux, significant symptoms or complications.
The majority of babies with GER will outgrow it by the time they reach 12 to 14 months of age, especially as their digestive system matures and they spend more time upright.
If you suspect your baby might have GERD symptoms rather than just GER, it’s important to consult a doctor. They can help diagnose the condition accurately and recommend appropriate treatments which might include dietary adjustments, feeding practices, or medications to manage the symptoms effectively. This ensures your baby stays comfortable and healthy as they grow.

Parental guidance and support for managing infant reflux at home
As well as buying reflux medication for babies from Pharmacy Online, there are other ways you help manage reflux at home effectively:
Keep feedings upright: Holding your baby upright during and for at least 30 minutes after feeding can help minimise reflux by using gravity to keep the stomach contents down.
Opt for smaller, more frequent feedings: Overfeeding can exacerbate reflux symptoms. Try giving smaller amounts more frequently throughout the day instead of larger feeds less often.
Burp regularly: Make sure to burp your baby during and after feedings. This helps release any air bubbles that might push stomach contents back up.
Adjust formula or breastfeeding techniques: Sometimes, switching up infant formula or adjusting breastfeeding techniques can help. For formula-fed babies, try using formulas designed for sensitive stomachs. If you're breastfeeding, tweaking your diet might improve symptoms. If you're unsure, always discuss changes with a healthcare professional first.
Handling reflux in your baby can be challenging, but with the right strategies and knowledge, you can help alleviate their discomfort and keep them happy and healthy.
Remember, if you're ever in doubt about your baby’s symptoms or their severity, it’s always best to reach out to a healthcare provider for guidance.
